A Taste of NY FNO 2011

This year’s New York Fashion Week began with the chaotic, fun, and annoying Fashion’s Night Out.  Created by Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, the event has become a charitable fashion block party spanning Manhattan’s boutiques for two years. A preview of the Missoni for Target collection, celebrity sightings, and free gifts from designer boutiques were just some of this year’s features.  Some stores opened their online doors to allow their nocturnal shoppers to buy at home. The event’s aim is to kick-off fashion week by allowing the fashion elite, connoisseurs, and general fashion lovers to come together in a fashion bubble for one night.
I attended my first FNO this year. I began by planning my itinerary on the event’s website, which virtually pinpointed events all over Manhattan. After much deliberation, I decided to head to Fifth Avenue to wander about. Each store has unique personal events, some of which are open to the public and generally stay open to 11:00 PM. I started my trek from Bryant Park, reminiscing on the Old Fashion Week shows I attended there, and walked uptown. The first thing I noticed was a line of women wearing sweater dresses with colorful zigzags on them, tapping their shiny stilettos in impatience. The line went around an entire city block, so I figured this must be some kind of celebrity sighting. My conversation with one cashmere-clad zebra went like this:
-“Excuse me! Don’t cut the line!”
-“Oh, sorry. I just wanted to see what you’re all waiting for?”
-“The Missoni for Target collection preview. Duh! I’ve been waiting for two hours. My ankles are about to break in these Louboutins.”
-“So you can buy things tonight?”
-“No, it’s a preview. I can look at everything and touch it and see the Missoni clan. Maybe I’ll be able to touch one of them.”
She continued to wait for 2 more hours with the rest of the shivering women until the doors opened and a fashion free-for-all began.
Meanwhile, I continued walking uptown cautiously picking which stores to enter. I approached a Sunglass Hut and noticed Chanel Iman, a Victoria’s Secret Angel and international supermodel. She was standing alone, totally uninterested in the buzz she was creating in the room. I guess she was charging up for the “difficult” week ahead, filled with strutting in heels and creations by the best designers in the world. If she was bored, I was, too and after sipping on a weak excuse for a mimosa I took my gift bag and left.
I enjoyed boutiques like Escada, which gave out free pocket watches that you could wear in your photo booth picture that was later screened in Times Square.  Fendi had a lovely display of their newest ad campaign’s shoes and accessories. The collection was based on an art teacher, imagined by Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini, who can relax and look chic while working away on a canvas and occasionally splattering some paint on her clothes. All of Fifth Avenue seemed to open its doors for a one-night peek into luxurious fashion. Honestly, the gaggles of fashionistas would be better barricades for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with their sharp heels and menacing studded dresses. The crowds were impenetrable at stores like Versace, where Drake made an appearance.  Hundreds of other boutiques celebrated their coolness and fashion consciousness by treating guests to endless champagne, DJs, and raffles all night long. The Night is one of those parties where you wake up with blisters on your feet, free stuff in your bag, and feeling like you’ve unwound one stitch in fashion’s silk screen.

Savage Beauty

A few weeks ago I stood in line in the Met for 30 minutes pissed off, hating every tourist, and ready to buy a damn membership to cut the mile long line. But, I kept my cool and gradually approached the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty extravaganza. Honestly, I was not expecting anything at all. I have seen the countless Plato’s Atlantis dresses on Gaga and Daphne Guiness and watched the final collection too much. But I did want to pay homage anyways.
Almost at the entrance, I got so excited to see the dress with all the shells neatly tiled on to the bodice,  I reached for my Blackberry, about to snap a pic….NO PICTURES MA’AM! and all  through the exhibit all I heard was NO PICTURES! NO CELL PHONES! Sheeesh, it was like that old lady who gives you the stink eye when you’re phone rings in a church.
Besides the security guards , the exhibit did transfix you in a certain way. You can play a little game when looking at the designs like I did. It’s called “Guess What Materials”. I realized I knew about 50% of the materials in each dress but the rest I had to read. It was funny when some tourists walked by saying McQueen probably used angel’s hair to sew his seams. Wierd.
The first room is called Romantic Mind. It shows McQueen’s earliest talents in tailoring. This room was kind of cool since you could see where he really started out. I really got the sense that his tailoring made him memorable. The jackets in this room looked so impeccably sewn and I venture to say this room showed the soul of McQueen.

Romantic Gothic followed and this was really more of my cup of tea. Skulls, gold and lace, oh my! I really became moved upon entering this room since there was this casket filled with five looks from Angels and Demons. Approaching this casket was like walking next to McQueen’s grave for me. I had a picture of the gold feathered dress hung in my room from when I first saw it, but I had not realized how much more intricate it is in real life. I was moved by this dress and felt how hard it must have been for McQueen’s staff to make the show go on. Reading this room’s dress descriptions was like reading a witch’s cookbook: a dash of leather, a pinch of black hair, a cauldron-full of sequins, and shower in lace for Goth couture success!
The Cabinet of Curiousities was astounding. I loved seeing some old favorites and new collections I hadn’t payed attention to. The head ornaments, shoes, and bodices really showed me his imagination. A swarm of butterflies on your head, those shoes from Bad Romance that  look like they could eat you, and a machine painted dress were all here.
In the Romantic Nationalism room, all you see is McQueen tartan. The walls are made to look like it, too. Imagine that, McQueen house treatments? I’d love some Plato’s Atlantis linoleum thanks! Anyways, the tartan interested me because I hadn’t payed too much attention to it before. I felt this room showed McQueen’s rage and his roots. The room is divided in that one side shows his British heritage and the other his Scottish. The mannequin’s hips are turned into eachother almost in a bitchy fighting stance.  The more interesting part is the Highland Rape collection in the next room. The wooden walls and floor have been bashed in while the mannequins stand proudly. Although the Highland Rape collection is not about women being raped, it does give you the sense of how angry McQueen was about the injustices related to the Highland Clearances. I’m curious what McQueen would say about how he conveys a feeling in his clothes, becuase all the clothes looked as pissed as I was waiting in line.
Romantic Exoticism was cool, but the most important part was the finale of that show. The two-way mirrored box with the gruesome looking woman inside was a cool philosophical question about beauty as we saw it. I could go on, but then you wouldnt go to the exhibit ;)

Romantic Primitivism was gorgeous, but I didnt stay there too long because Romantic Naturism was up next! ok, so the stand-out for me was the dress made out of fresh flowers which decayed over time. Such a brilliant/simple idea, but so complex, no? I see that McQueen was like a couture boy scout in this dress. the dress ages as you do. The flowers flake off likfe your youth does.  Everything looks like he played god and created bodices out of lace and flowers and Armadillo shoes. Imagine Eve in a pair of Armadillos? I’d eat that apple seeds and all.
Plato’s Atlantis was the final collection in the exhibit. I just couldnt leave the exhibit when I saw these clothes. All of the clothes, hats, and shoes could not keep me from asking myself: where did this genius come from? I know we look at these things and say “he must’ve been crazy”, “he worked so hard”, ” he sees things we don’t.” But McQueen was an artist for us, he didnt design for just Kate Moss or just to sell out; he did it so we could see fairy tales come true in fashion, passion, and life.

Rag and Bone @ Saks Fifth Avenue!

This past Thursday, my friend Gabi and I were able to attend Rag and Bone's party at Saks Fifth Avenue. The party was a lot of fun, with the cutest little appetizers and yummiest wine floating around. R&B designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright hung out with us and picked out a cute little outfit for us to take a picture with them in . Lots of bloggers, photogs, and overall chicsters around.

The shirt I fell in love with !

The new Rag and Bone section is on the 5th floor at Saks among many fresh designers. If you ever need that rocker edge to an outfit, this is where you wanna look!

Now some pics of me and Gabi channeling some R&B love :)

Happy Birthday Prim eCommerce!!!!

Congrats to Prim for launching their eCommerce site!!
I've heard of Prim for a while now and finally checked them out. Lo and behold, I've found one of the cutest/girliest/badass labels out there.
I've chosen three of my top favorite looks and before you start shopping, I want you to love Prim even more:

starting March 11-13, take 25% off the entire site!

This jacket is the first thing that caught my eye. It is cut like a motorcycle jacket, available in a silvery or gold hue, and that collar. I'm a sucker for badass collars like this one because they can be left down, or flipped up when you find yourself freezing. Beautiful tailoring job, and at $258 it is a bit out of my budget, but I would still get this item. Totally hot!

Since I'm trying to be girlier this Spring, this jacket caught my eye, too. It is called  the Swing Coat. Now, I remember doing a few assignments on Dior's New Look and kinda remember jackets like this. But this version is much more deconstructed and "taken from the boys." Also $258, I bet every fashionista in SoHo is dying to get their hands on this one.

This skirt has been in my dreams ever since I was kindly e-mailed the lookbook for Spring. It is available in a few other colors, but I think this hot pink is inching my credit card towards my hand ever second. I might be imagining that.
But how sick does this model look (and her hair is bringing me that much closer to dying my own). I really think this is the perfect skirt for whenever. I mean whenever as in when you're hanging out on the Williamsburgh waterfront, going to a club, or bringing Spring into the office. Im loving this skirt and it is definately on the top of my favorites list!

Check Prim out right this second!

Wanna look like Marc Jacobs Fall 2011?

These are 3 runway looks from Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 collection that I adore. And since we can't all afford these awesome creations, I have found some stylish solutions via forever21, for you to look at

Here's the full collection.

Look 1:

This look is a very streamlined version of a cute Parisienne look. The Chanel-y collar and tight, dominatrix skirt work surprisingly well together, oui?

The two skirts are the closest finds I have for the gorgeous snake one above, and if you want to keep the Chanel-y collar idea, this shrug has that effect on the outfit. Just tuck a white top into the skirt underneath the shrug and voila!

Look 2:

This look is one of a kind, but you can fake it with a shirt that is cinched halfway down your abdomen. Even cuter: pair the top with a skirt that has a similar color or pattern and that is formfitting.

Look 3:
This look plays on the previous one, but creates a new silhouette. The dreamy sleeves make this even cooler.

The skirt is a start if you want to do the floral-y design . The tops I chose are nice and light like MJ’s, you can just squeeze the tight skirt on top and go.

If you want to keep playing up you collars with this look, I would go for this blazer. You can layer shirts underneath, put on any skirt your heart desires and still channel Marc!

Good luck!
